I think that the greatest pain/regret at the end, on judgement day will far surpass going to hell for some. It will be the realization of how our lives would have turned out if we fully trusted in God and seeing what was forsaken for satisfaction of self instead of a dying dedication to Christ. Seeing the plans God talks of in his word, plans which are good, perfect but were passed on from lack of total trust in God in exchange for mediocrity of self reliance.
We hold on to our dreams, fears and expectations and forget that God is above all that. His will for our lives is perfect, but we choose our own paths instead. We get desperate in waiting and accept imitations of Gods promise to us. We accept to have a child with Hagar because that is the only thing that makes human sense. But our thoughts are not Gods thoughts and His promises are not to be compromised because He is LORD. Anything that is not of Him or from Him is just a destruction and we end up not marrying well, taking the wrong jobs, making decisions that seem pleasing to us but contradict Gods purposes- if only we would just trust Him.
The good news is that we can always go back to be reconciled to him, Abraham is known as a man of faith because even though he stumbled he always went back to Christ and trusted him Totally, Jonah was restored after he had disobeyed God, so was Peter after he had denied Jesus 3 times. Its not too late to go back to God after we have chosen our own way. The time is now.
When we walk before the Lord blamelessly and faithfully we receive His promises to us and therefore in the end we will have no regrets.
When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty[a]; walk before me faithfully and be blameless. 2 Then I will make my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.” Genesis 17:1
